WHEN BLAKE TURNED THE CAR onto the street that led to his parents’ house, Samantha was afraid she’d made another mistake. One almost as big as kissing her boss. Except in spite of the inner monologue she was running through her head chastising her for risking her job and being wildly unprofessional and blurring lines that had no business being blurred, she couldn’t make herself regret it. The first brush of his lips over hers and she’d been lost, ready to throw up her hands and knock down her own walls if it let her get closer to something that felt so right. She didn’t think anything had ever felt as good as kissing Blake. Surrendering to the heat and giving herself over to the taste of him and the feeling of his skin, hot under her hands.

She opened her mouth to ask him what he was thinking but instead of heading to the front of the house, he turned down a narrow alley. He paused at the entrance to a driveway and turned to face her.

“Still trust me?”

It was harder to nod her agreement, sitting at what she thought was the back entrance to the senior Southerlands house, but the truth was she did trust him. Enough to go along with whatever plan he’d come up with.

“Good,” he said giving her hand a squeeze and a smile that burned away her objections. “My parents have a carriage house which used to double as my daddy’s workshop. Travis had been using it for his boat building, but business picked up enough for him to rent a place in town. It isn’t fancy but there’s a sofa. I’ll sneak you in and you can rest there until the marauding hoards go home. There’s a TV and a small refrigerator, or you could even take a nap if you want. I’ll come get you when everyone’s gone home.

A nap sounded like the best idea she’d heard in days, but still, sneaking into someone’s house made her feel a lot like Goldilocks.

“Won’t your parents mind? Especially after I made such a show of leaving.” She’d just met her, but Samantha already knew without a doubt, she never wanted to do anything to disappoint Blake’s mother.

“Samantha, you have to believe me. My mother would have much more trouble if I didn’t bring you back here. She’ll understand; I promise.”

It was hard to hold onto feeling bad about things when he seemed so sure of himself. His confidence was contagious.

“Okay,” she said.

“Keep your head down and follow me.” He gave her a cocky grin and then he was out the door and around the car, helping her with her bags and leading the way down the gravel drive.

By the time they reached the safety of the carriage house, they were laughing so hard; it was a miracle the people in the house didn’t hear them. Part of it was the absurdity of the situation but she suspected an equal amount was fueled by exhaustion at the day that wouldn’t end.
